Hira Mandi

Hira Mandi (literally Diamond Market) is the red light district of Lahore (the second largest city in Pakistan) and throughout the Indian subcontinent it shares the reputation that Amsterdam has in Europe.  It is a tangled maze of backstreets and alleys. Sex-workers and dancers known as hijras, usually defined as ‘neither men nor women’ are born transgender, hermaphrodite or transgender of female gender, trapped inside male bodies live here and perform at weddings, parties, streets and in private houses.

Hira Mandi provides refuge to homosexual men and allows young boys and adult men to develop friendships and sexual relations with other males.

This silk-covered little book (15,5 x 15,5 cm) shows Hira Mandi and the men/women living and working in it in 29 photographs.
