Public Discourse and Welfare State Reform

The Social Democratic Experience

All over Europe, welfare state reform has been at the top of  the political agenda for some time now. Since the 1990’s, social democrats have played an active and sometimes controversial part in these reforms. In order to convince the general public of the need for change and adaptation, good policies are indispensable. But it takes more. It also takes first rate stories and first -rate storytellers to generate public support. This book is about the recent social democratic reform policies as well as about the stories and the leadership styles that accompanied them.

Vivien Schmidt, well known for her The Futures of European Capitalism, sets out the theoretical framework about the role of public discourse for social democratic reform projects. Authors from different European countries such as the UK, Germany, Israel, the post-communist states, Italy and The Netherlands confront this theory with their respective national experiences. Others analyse the public discourse in the Party of European Socialists and the EU.This book is in the end a guidebook about success and failure of welfare state reform.
